In Portugal you will find the possibility of obtaining the tax status of non-habitual resident (NHR) applicable to those who apply.
Requirements:
• Not having been a tax resident in Portugal in the last 5 years;
• Fulfill the requirements to be a tax resident in Portugal in the year in which you apply for NHR status - having stayed at least 183 days in Portugal in the last 12 months, or, having stayed less time, have housing that suggests that you intend to maintain it and occupy as a habitual residence.
Deadline:
The application for registration, as a non-habitual resident, must be made until March 31, inclusive, of the year following that in which you become resident in Portuguese territory
The status of non-habitual resident, once assigned, will have a duration of 10 years, provided the above requirements are maintained.
Under the NHR regime, the following income obtained abroad will be exempt from tax:
• Pensions
• Real estate rents
• Interest and dividend distribution (return on capital)
• Income from capital gains
• Income from self-employment from certain activities with high added value.
Also under the NHR regime, the following income obtained in Portugal is subject to a fixed rate of 20%:
• Income from dependent or independent work from certain activities with high added value (which include the administration, management and direction of companies).
